Before You Spend Budget: 15 Project Questions to Ask

Before spending budget, project owners should slow down enough to ask practical questions. The goal is not to block action. The goal is to spend with clearer intent and less avoidable risk.

Start with purpose: What problem does this project solve? What result would make the project worthwhile? What happens if nothing is done? Then ask scope questions: What is included? What is excluded? What assumptions are still untested?

Move to people and decisions: Who owns the project? Who can approve changes? Who must provide information? Which professional roles are needed, and which are only guesses at this stage?

Ask timing and budget questions: Is the timeline driven by a real deadline or preference? What dependencies could delay work? Is the budget fixed, staged or still being evaluated?

Finally, ask risk and success questions: What are the three biggest uncertainties? What would make the project fail? What acceptance criteria will prove the work is complete? These fifteen questions create a better starting point than immediate hiring.
